National Autonomous Vehicle Day plus Uber vs. Waymo

I found a holiday today on National Day Calendar that is perfect for this blog, National Autonomous Vehicle Day.
Observe the future on May 31 with National Autonomous Vehicle Day and experience the realization of science and technology merging like never before.

An autonomous vehicle, including self-driving cars (both manned and unmanned) and unmanned ariel [aerial] vehicles, may seem like something out of science fiction movie, but these cutting edge technologies have placed a variety of industries at a precipice of change. Cars that take us from point A to point B without having to touch the wheel are already a reality in some states. Autonomous Friendly Corridors, like one proposed in North Dakota, could boost commerce and become centers of more innovation. Pilot programs have launched and are being tested in differing formats.

The year of 2017 is a big year for the Autonomous Vehicle. The first ten testing sites dedicated to developing autonomous vehicles were announced by the US Department of Transportation. While some states grapple with how this new technology affects current laws and what changes may need to be made, others have already addressed those questions paving the way (or the skies) for autonomous vehicles to make their debut in their own states. Testing is underway in proving grounds like Pittsburgh and San Diego and planned in many more.

Advancements in technology are propelling industry and infrastructure to keep pace. Proposals range far and wide, influencing agriculture, commerce, medicine and transportation.

According to the Brooking[s] Institution, one-quarter of all cars will be autonomous by 2040. National Autonomous Vehicle Day recognizes that the future is here and it’s in the form of a self-driving car that gets us safely from here to there.
I first blogged about self-driving cars in 2013, when I wrote "We may not get flying cars for the mass market, but another science fiction transportation idea, self-driving autos, looks like it's on its way."  I wrote about them again in last year's Self-driving cars--fantasy and reality, which showed that autonomous vehicles are still coming but have a long way to go.  They're a lot closer now that there is a day in their honor.

Speaking of fantasy, reality, and self-driving vehicles getting closer, follow over the jump for a story involving autonomous cars, the latest in the dispute between Waymo (part of Alphabet, the parent company for Google) and Uber.

Electron rocket launches in New Zealand

I've been paying nearly all my attention in commercial space to Elon Musk's SpaceX, including last month's serious SpaceX launches and recovers a reused rocket and silly SpaceX launch you up.  Musk has competitors and one of them registered a success last week, as CNBC reported in RocketLab Succeeded In Its Orbital Rocket Launch.

A Silicon Valley-founded venture has successfully launched a 3D-printed rocket into space.
That's good news.  TomoNewsUS has more on Electron and other recent space developments in Rocket Lab Electron launch: New Zealand joins space race with 3D-printed rocket

The Rocket Lab Electron is made of carbon composite material, and its rocket boosters use 3D-printed Rutherford engines, according to the Rocket Lab website.

The rocket’s first stage has a cluster of nine electric engines that burn liquid oxygen and refined kerosene. The second stage has a single vacuum-optimized engine that can carry payloads weighing up to 225 kilograms.

The Electron rocket will deliver small satellites into space. They will be used for mapping, to predict the weather, provide high-speed internet, and analyse the environment.

Rocket Lab plans to complete three test launches before the Electron is available commercially. The company plans to eventually build and launch one rocket per week, with flights costing around US$5 million.
Looks like NASA's SLS will be in a race with SpaceX taking tourists around Earth's moon, even if neither side acknowledges it.  If so, that should make both missions even more interesting.

Newsy and WOOD-TV on Memorial Day

For today's patriotic holiday, I'm going to be as serious as I was last year but without the Presidents.  I begin with Newsy's history lesson What is Memorial Day all about?

It started as Decoration Day after the Civil War and officially became a national holiday in 1971.
Speaking of national cemeteries, Michigan has two, the older of which is Fort Custer National Cemetery (yes, that Custer; he's from Monroe, Michigan).  WOOD-TV brought its viewers and YouTube channel subscribers the highlights of yesterday's Fort Custer National Cemetery Memorial Day ceremony.

Video of the Memorial Day ceremony held at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek on May 28, 2017.
As I wrote last year, "Remember the serious reason for the holiday before lighting the grill."

Speculative fiction on DVD and Blu-Ray at the 2017 Saturn Awards

I thought I had finished blogging about the Saturn Awards with 'Supergirl' vs. 'The Flash' at the Saturn Awards plus television nomination leftovers.  Then I started voting and found out that I was not only eligible to cast ballots for the movie and television awards, but also the DVD and Blu-Ray releases of last year.  I hadn't written about those, since I didn't expect to vote for them.  Surprise!

So for the Sunday entertainment feature, I present the nominees from the Saturn Awards along with my thoughts about which ones I'm voting for and which I think will win.
Best DVD / BD Release:

Dog Eat Dog
The Girl
The Lobster
The Man Who Knew Infinity
The Wailing
Tales of Halloween
I've been wishing "The Lobster" "good luck, you'll need it" since last December and it's the movie I know best among the nominees, so I'm voting for it.  As for which will win, I have no idea.
Best DVD / BD Special Edition Release:

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition
The Hills Have Eyes Limited Edition
The Iron Giant Signature Edition
Phantasm Remastered
Raising Cain
Mad Max: Fury Road Black and Chrome Edition
I get to vote for "Mad Max: Fury Road" again?  O.K, I will!  That doesn't mean it will win.  This electorate might prefer "Phantasm Remastered."
Best Classic Film Release on DVD /  BD:

Destiny
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane
Gog 3D
It Came From Outer Space
Donovan's Brain
Time After Time
My choice is "Time After Time," but I expect "It Came From Outer Space" would be more likely to win.
Best Television Release on DVD / BD:

Banshee: The Final Season
Hannibal: The Complete Series Collection
Mr. Robot: Season 2.0
Salem's Lot
Versailles: Season One
Star Trek: The Animated Series
The image I used to illustrate this post gave my vote away; my choice is "Star Trek: The Animated Series."  If that hadn't been nominated, I might have voted for "Mr. Robot," but I already voted for the show in Best Action/Thriller TV Series, so "Star Trek" deserves my love.  It's the only vote for the franchise I'm casting as I voted for "Suicide Squad" instead of "Star Trek Beyond" in Best Make-up.*  Will it win?  Maybe, but "Hannibal" or "Salem's Lot" would be my choices for the Saturn Electorate.
Best Collection on DVD / BD:

Buster Keaton Shorts Collection 1917-23
Frankenstein: Complete Legacy Collection
Herschell Gordon Lewis Feast
Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection
Pioneers of African American Cinema
The Wolf Man: Complete Legacy Collection
Which one of these would I actually watch?  Easy, the Marx Brothers.  I don't think it will beat either Frankenstein or The Wolf Man, but I don't care; I'm not voting for them.

No post about the Saturn Awards would be complete without a link to the application to vote.
Speaking of "this electorate," my readers and I have a chance to change its composition.  Click here to apply for an affiliate membership.  At $25, one can vote for the best films and television shows.  At $40, one can vote for all categories.  I'm paying $40.  I hope my readers do, too.
Hurry up; voting closes on the 30th!

Previous posts about the 2017 Saturn Awards:
*I also changed my vote for Special Visual Effects from "The Jungle Book" to "Doctor Strange."  The first may be more technically proficient, but the latter had more entertainment value.  I also changed my vote from either "The Conjuring 2" or "Don't Breathe" to "Train to Busan."  The Korean zombie film had the highest rating on IMDB of all the nominees.

Death of Bond songwriter Chris Cornell inspires dark tourism in Detroit

The loss of Roger Moore earlier this week was not the only recent death related to James Bond.  The week before, WXYZ reported "Casino Royale" singer/songwriter Chris Cornell died in Detroit.

That wasn't the end of the story.  This week, WXYZ reported there were already People trying to book hotel room where Chris Cornell died.

I'm not surprised, both as an expatriate Angelino and a current Detroiter.  As the former, I know that nothing enshrines a celebrity like a tragic death.  As for the latter, I've learned that Detroit has taste for the macabre.  Also, I'm with Carolyn Clifford; there is a name for everything, and "dark tourism" belongs right up there with ruin porn as a theme for Detroit tourism.  Speaking of which, Kim Russell did a good job of listing famous deaths in Detroit, especially that of Harry Houdini.  What she didn't mention about Houdini was that he died on Halloween.  That's the kind of spooky detail one can't make up.

I'm leaving my readers with Cornell's claim to Bond fame, "You Know My Name," Cornell's theme song for "Casino Royale."

Another 'Pirates of the Caribbean' alignment chart plus Hans Zimmer and Tina Guo in concert

Full-size

In a footnote to 'Outlander' alignment chart, I observed that "'Pirates of the Caribbean' alignment chart has been in the top ten all week with 226 page views and counting."  It hit a maximum of 230 page views later that day.  That was more than a week ago, and the post is still in the weekly top ten, earning page views every day.  I credit today's opening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" for this surge of interest in the post.  Since my readers want to see a "Pirates of the Caribbean" alignment chart, I'm giving them another one, which is now my second favorite.*

Of course, no alignment chart post of mine would be complete without a fan cover or live performance of the series or movie theme song, so here is Hans Zimmer - Pirates - Live at Coachella 2017 Sunday, April 16th featuring Tina Guo on the electric cello.

I plan to post another video starring Guo next week for the opening of the "Wonder Woman" movie, as she is the soloist responsible for the unique sound of "I Thought She Was With You" AKA the Wonder Woman movie theme.  Stay tuned.

*Reader interest convinced me to post this instead of something about Detroit's continuing loss of population or the Atlantic hurricane season.  I'm still in an "I can't be all DOOM all the time" mood.

Vox explains how to talk to conservatives about renewable energy

Just yesterday, I showed my students the video that formed the core of Seeker/DNews on when and why environmentalism became a partisan issue.  As far as I can tell, it made the point I wanted, that the environment had once been a bipartisan issue and could be again.  Last month, Vox posted a video on a related theme, I’m a Tea Party conservative. Here’s how to win over Republicans on renewable energy.

Activist Debbie Dooley has some choice words for individuals who believe that fossil fuels have no impact on the environment. “If you think fossil fuel is not damaging the environment,” she says, “pull your car in a garage, start up your engine, and inhale the exhaust fumes for a few minutes and see what happens.”

You could be forgiven for suspecting that Dooley might be a Democrat. According to a Gallup poll conducted last year, 85 percent of Democrats believe humans are contributing to increases in global temperature. But she’s not. Dooley is a conservative, gun-owning Trump supporter who also happens to be a co-founder of the Tea Party.

Dooley runs Conservatives for Energy Freedom, where she advocates for the expansion of renewable energy and for cuts to government regulations she believes hinder that growth. Through her efforts, she has even won over unlikely allies such as Al Gore.

The problem, according to Dooley, when speaking of her fellow conservatives, is that “they've been brainwashed for decades into believing we're not damaging the environment.” As a result, Dooley speaks with her fellow conservatives about renewable energy in a political language conservatives respect, using phrases like energy freedom, energy choice, and national security.

According to Dooley, when speaking to conservatives in these terms, “you have a receptive audience and they will listen to you. If you lead off with climate change, they're not going to pay a bit of attention to anything else you say.”
I'm perfectly amenable to using "energy freedom, energy choice, and national security" as well as competition and innovation as selling points for renewable energy.  I would have been using those long before I had ever heard about climate change (but not the greenhouse effect; I heard about that in the late 1960s).

That's not the only appearance of Dooley in a Vox video about climate and the environment.  She appears about four and one-half minutes into Scientists really aren’t the best champions of climate science, which was posted yesterday.

Facts and data alone won’t inspire people to take action in the fight against global warming. So what will?
This isn't just a way to talk to conservatives, but to anyone who isn't convinced by science.  This makes the advice in this video useful to all kinds of environmental advocates.  Handy!

R.I.P. Roger Moore

Almost five years ago, I explained why I blog about James Bond.
First, this blog is about science fiction as much as it is about collapse.  In that vein, the James Bond movies, even more so than the books, qualify, as they are really science fiction films set 20 minutes into the future.  As science fiction, the films both celebrate the latest technology and explore in a very escapist fashion a current technological, scientific, or even environmental issue that is a source of societal anxiety.  Keeping that ambivalence in mind while watching a Bond film makes it a more intellectually interesting experience, at least for me.  See if it works for you, too.

Second, Bond has averted the near total extinction of humanity at least twice, as well as defused other situations that could have resulted in World War III several other times.  Because of these 'good deeds,' he qualifies as an honorary Crazy Eddie.  That alone makes the films worthy of discussion.
Both of those times that Bond saved humanity happened when Roger Moore played the role, first in "The Spy Who Loved Me" and again in "Moonraker," the two films in the franchise that are most obviously science fiction and therefore two of my favorite Bond outings.  Thus it is with sadness that I pass along CNN's James Bond actor Roger Moore dies.

Roger Moore, who gained worldwide stardom playing James Bond in seven installments of the franchise, died at the age of 89. CNN's Sara Sidner looks back at his life and career.
Speaking of Moore's wit and smooth delivery, CNN shared some of Roger Moore's best James Bond one-liners.

Sir Roger Moore portrayed the character of James Bond in seven "007" films with a biting wit all his own.
Bond lives on, but his funniest actor has passed.  R.I.P.

Serious and silly 'Star Trek' previews -- 'Discovery' and 'The Orville'

Even though I said farewell to The Palace of Auburn Hills yesterday, I'm still in an "I can't be all DOOM all the time" mood.  I guess posting a week's worth of entertainment entries does that to me.  Since I'm still in the mood to amuse myself and my readers, I'm sharing two previews about "Star Trek."  The first is Star Trek: Discovery - First Look Trailer.

Before Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise there was Discovery. Now, one of the most iconic and influential global franchises returns to television with Star Trek: Discovery. The CBS All Access Original Series arrives this Fall.
The preview looks great and the actress who played Sasha from "The Walking Dead" looks even better than she did in that role or the one before, when she played one of Peter Pan's henchmen in "Once Upon a Time."  I'm glad to see her moving up in the world.

That was the serious Trek preview.  Now the silly: THE ORVILLE Official Trailer (2017) Star Trek Spoof, Seth MacFarlane Comedy Drama Series HD.

The Star Trek Discovery series is still a few months out before airing on CBS. But until then, we’ve got what looks like the next best thing: Seth MacFarlane’s spoof of the franchise, The Orville.
Welcome to what "Galaxy Quest" would be as a real series in the 21st Century.  Consider that a compliment.

I'm looking forward to both shows.  I'm sure I'll be blogging about them when they air.  In the meantime, have some 'Star Trek' themed drinks for the show's 50th anniversary, which is technically still ongoing.  Live long and prosper!

Farewell to The Palace of Auburn Hills

"Stay tuned for a post bidding farewell to the venue of yesterday's commencement, as it was the last one held there."  So I concluded 'Stranger Things' alignment charts, itself a call back to my writing "I'll have something to say about the venue on Monday, as it will almost certainly be the last commencement held there" as part of the concluding paragraph of Vox on 'Pomp and Circumstance'.  After two consecutive days of teasing my readers, it's time for me to deliver.

Since I like video, I'll let WXYZ report what's happening in last month's Pistons say goodbye to the Palace.

Yes, the Pistons will join the Red Wings in their new arena in Foxtown.  That's great news for downtown and midtown Detroit, bringing people and their money into the city.  For the property where The Palace now stands, the future is less certain.  WXYZ speculates about that in What's next for The Palace of Auburn Hills?

Whatever happens with the property, last Saturday's event will probably be the last time I ever visit the arena.  I'll miss it.  I said as much after the luncheon before the ceremony.  I also went back onto the floor to look up at the seats one last time after it was all over.  I hope the college finds as good a venue for next year's commencement.

For my readers who want to explore why the Pistons left The Palace for Foxtown, I suggest they read the Detroit Free Press's How miscalculation, market trends doomed Palace of Auburn Hills.  The article explains how suburbia is declining, not from Peak Oil, but from changes in tastes of the rising generation.  As for The Palace, it joins Northland Mall and the Silverdome as victims of the decreasing viability of suburbia in competition with walkable downtown neighborhoods and Internet commerce.  May they all find new and better uses when they are redeveloped.

'Stranger Things' alignment charts

Full size

Yesterday, I told my readers to "stay tuned for 'another alignment chart for another series nominated at the Saturn Awards on Sunday,' as I wrote about in yesterday's 'Outlander' alignment chart.  Any guesses as to what the series might be?  Hint:  I posted about it this month but haven't posted an alignment chart for it before.  Write your answers in the comments!"  No one ventured a guess.  As my readers can tell, the answer is "Stranger Things," which is nominated for three Saturn Awards, Best New Media Television Series, Best Younger Actor on TV for Millie Bobby Brown, and Best Actress on a Television Series for Winona Ryder.

The chart above is my favorite, but it's not the only one.   The chart below works almost as well and makes a good Dungeons and Dragons joke to boot.

Full size

There's also a partial chart for the top row with just the younger actors, which is good for a laugh.

Full size

No alignment chart post of mine would be complete without a fan or live cover or the theme song, so I present a "Stranger Things" Cello Medley by Nicholas Yee.

Medley of themes from the "Stranger Things" series, originally by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein. Featuring my good friends Adam Caulfield and Katherine Pernal!

Like many others, I was captivated by the "Stranger Things" series when it came out earlier this year and fell in love with its exciting storytelling, engrossing set design and unique blend of creepiness, nostalgia and heartwarming moments. The music adds such richness to the show and I wanted to showcase its strength and versatility in this medley. Enjoy!
That's it for this week's Entertainment Sunday.  Stay tuned for a post bidding farewell to the venue of yesterday's commencement, as it was the last one held there.

Vox on 'Pomp and Circumstance'

I opened last year's Bill Maher on commencements, past and future with both a reminiscence and a forecast.
A week ago today, I attended my college's Commencement ceremony, where I watched my students from the past few years get their degrees.  It was a wonderful experience, including the addresses by the student speaker and the former CEO of Garden Fresh.  I'll be back for next year's ceremony.
Commencement is today.  As promised, I'm going.  To celebrate, I'm sharing Vox's video Why every American graduation plays the same song.

We're all familiar with Pomp & Circumstance, the graduation song that's the official soundtrack of almost every commencement. But how did it get so big? In this episode of Vox's Almanac, Phil Edwards investigates and finds diamonds, war, and Dame Clara Butt.
Yes, I'll be hearing this march a lot today.  It's better than playing it, which I did for three years in high school.

I'll have something to say about the venue on Monday, as it will almost certainly be the last commencement held there.  In the meantime, stay tuned for "another alignment chart for another series nominated at the Saturn Awards on Sunday," as I wrote about in yesterday's 'Outlander' alignment chart.  Any guesses as to what the series might be?  Hint:  I posted about it this month but haven't posted an alignment chart for it before.  Write your answers in the comments!

'Outlander' alignment chart

While looking for the image to illustrate 'Game of Thrones' vs. 'Outlander' at the Saturn Awards, I stumbled across the following alignment chart for the series.  Since my readers like them and I haven't posted a new set of ones since Alignment charts for the 50th anniversary of 'Star Trek', I'm sharing it with my readers.*

Full-size

Of course, no alignment chart post of mine would be complete without a fan cover or live performance of the series or movie theme song, so here is The Skye Boat Song - Outlander Soundtrack Cover - Piano & Violin by Mathilde Quignon and Valentin Prud'homme.

Piano and violin cover of "The Skye Boat Song" from the tv series "Outlander".
I'll have something a little more serious for tomorrow, followed by another alignment chart for another series nominated at the Saturn Awards on Sunday.  Maybe by Monday I'll finally get out of my "I can't be all DOOM all the time" mood.

*'Pirates of the Caribbean' alignment chart has been in the top ten all week with 226 page views and counting.

'Supergirl' vs. 'The Flash' at the Saturn Awards plus television nomination leftovers

I ended 'Game of Thrones' vs. 'Outlander' at the Saturn Awards by telling my readers "Stay tuned for superhero shows beating each other up and the rest of the nominees tomorrow."  Yes, just like I thought I finished the movie nominees with superheroes in 'Deadpool' vs. 'Suicide Squad' at the Saturn Awards plus movie nomination leftovers, I'm finishing the television nominees with costumed crusaders as well.*  This time, I'm featuring "Supergirl" vs. "The Flash," although the shows are on the same network, the plots cross over, and the fandoms overlap.
Best Superhero Adaptation Television Series

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Arrow
The Flash
Gotham
Legion
Supergirl
The defending champion in this category is "The Flash."  The show I think has the best chance of beating it is "Supergirl."  However, I'm not voting for either of them or the show I planned on voting for last year, "Gotham."  This year, I'm voting for "Legion," which is an "X-Men" spinoff, although that's not obvious from the first season.  My wife and I found it to be a really smart and creative take on superpowers (Legion isn't a superhero yet).

In addition to Best Superhero Adaptation Television Series, both shows have other nominations.  "Supergirl" has also earned three acting nominations,  Melissa Benoist for Best Actress on a Television Series, Mehcad Brooks for Best Supporting Actor on a Television Series, and Tyler Hoechlin for Best Guest Performance on a Television Series.  "The Flash" has two acting nominations, Grant Gustin for Best Actor on a Television Series and Candice Patton for Best Supporting Actress on a Television Series. I'm not voting for any of them, but I wish them luck just the same.
Best Action/Thriller Television Series

Animal Kingdom
Bates Motel
Designated Survivor
The Librarians
Mr. Robot
Riverdale
Underground
My favorite show among this field is "The Librarians," but as I wrote both last year and yesterday, I think it's miscategorized.  As far as I'm concerned, it's a fantasy, so I'm not voting for it.  Instead, I'm going to defend the entertainment insider opinion and vote for "Mr. Robot."  I doubt either of them will win.  Based on last year's winner, "Hannibal," which has been cancelled, I expect "Bates Motel" will win instead, although it wouldn't surprise me if "Riverdale" pulled an upset.  Yes, this electorate might just go for Archie pretending to be "Twin Peaks."
Best Presentation on Television

11.22.63
Channel Zero
Doctor Who: The Return of Dr. Mysterio
Mars
The Night Manager
Rats
The conventional choice would be "The Night Manager," a spy thriller.  However, the winner last year was a "Doctor Who" special, so I expect this year's Doctor Who will win, too.  I'm not voting for either.  Instead, I'm voting for "Mars," which my wife and I found to be a gripping combination of science fiction and science fact.

That's it for the television nominations.  Now, for what will probably be the next to last time, are the voting instructions.
Speaking of "this electorate," my readers and I have a chance to change its composition.  Click here to apply for an affiliate membership.  At $25, one can vote for the best films and television shows.  At $40, one can vote for all categories.  I'm paying $40.  I hope my readers do, too.
Time for me to put together my ballot and vote.  I hope at least some of my readers do the same!

*Yes, I thought I had posted all the movie nominations.  It turned out I had forgotten one category.
Best Performance by a Younger Actor

Ruby Barnhill (The BFG)
Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople)
Tom Holland (Captain America: Civil War)
Lewis MacDougall (A Monster Calls)
Neel Sethi (The Jungle Book)
Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch)
I probably should vote for Ruby Barnhill, Lewis MacDougall, or Neel Sethi, but I'm going to take the lead of the BAFTA Film Awards and vote for Tom Holland as Spiderman.  Too bad I forgot about this category; it would have fit right in with the Marvel vs. DC theme of the last planned movie post.

'Game of Thrones' vs. 'Outlander' at the Saturn Awards

I wrote that I might "post my last entry about the nominees, which could be as early as tomorrow" to conclude 'Deadpool' vs. 'Suicide Squad' at the Saturn Awards plus movie nomination leftovers.  I could do that today, as I have already posted three entries about television nominees, A Saturn Awards nomination for 'Star Wars Rebels' plus music from 'Rogue One' for the Revenge of the Sixth, 'The Walking Dead' vs. 'Westworld' at the 2017 Saturn Awards, and 'Stranger Things' and 'The Walking Dead' win at MTV Movie & TV Awards, leaving only four categories that I haven't covered yet.  However, I'm having too much fun to finish now.  Instead, I'm featuring "Game of Thrones" vs. "Outlander" today.  From Slashfilm.
Best Fantasy Television Series

Beyond
Game of Thrones
The Good Place
Lucifer
The Magicians
Outlander
Preacher
I'm a lot happier with this year's nominees for fantasy than last year.  There appears to be a lot less confusion about the better fantasy shows, although I think "The Leftovers" is still being overlooked and "The Librarians" is miscatgorized as action.  That given, I'm not going to vote the way I expected to last year.  Then, I was planning on voting for "Game of Thrones," the conventional choice, especially as it has won a record 39 Emmy Awards over its run.  However, "Outlander" won instead.  The show also beat "Game of Thrones" for Favorite Premium Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series at the People's Choice Awards.  I fully expect "Outlander" to win again, but I'm not voting for either show.  Instead, I'm going to vote for "Lucifer," which is one of two shows that my wife and I watch regularly, the other being "Beyond."  I don't expect it to win, but it deserves my love.

"Outlander" is nominated for three other awards, Sam Heughan for Best Actor on a Television Series, Caitriona Balfe for Best Actress on a Television Series, and Dominique Pinon for Best Guest Performance on a Television Series.   "Game of Thones" has two other nominations, with Lena Headey competing directly with Balfe for Best Actress on a Television Series and Kit Harrington nominated for Best Supporting Actor on a Television Series.  As of now, I'm not voting for any of them, although I could be persuaded to change my vote for Best Actress on a Television Series from Kim Dickens to Balfe.

Speaking of voting, here are the instructions on how to vote.
Speaking of "this electorate," my readers and I have a chance to change its composition.  Click here to apply for an affiliate membership.  At $25, one can vote for the best films and television shows.  At $40, one can vote for all categories.  I'm paying $40.  I hope my readers do, too.
That's it for today.  Stay tuned for superhero shows beating each other up and the rest of the nominees tomorrow.

'Deadpool' vs. 'Suicide Squad' at the Saturn Awards plus movie nomination leftovers

I've already posted twice about the Saturn Award movie nominees, first in 'Rogue One' at the Saturn Awards for Star Wars Day and again in yesterday's 'Hidden Figures' wins two MTV Movie Awards.  Last year, I was able to finish the movie nominees in three entries, so I should be able to do the same this year.  So with no further ado, here are the rest of the movie nominees from Slashfilm, beginning with the ones for "Deadpool" and "Suicide Squad."
Best Comic-to-Motion Picture Release

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Captain America: Civil War
Deadpool
Doctor Strange
Suicide Squad
X-Men: Apocalypse
I'll remind my readers what I wrote in 'Suicide Squad' vs. 'Deadpool' at the Razzies and Oscars about how I expect "Deadpool" will fare: "I'm sure it will get its revenge by winning the Saturn Award for Best Comic to Motion Picture Release, where it will handily beat "Suicide Squad," which is also nominated."   It should come as no surprise that I plan on voting for "Deadpool" in this category.

Continuing with "Deadpool," its star is nominated in the next category.
Best Actor in a Film

Chris Evans (Captain America: Civil War)
Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange)
Chris Pratt (Passengers)
Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool)
Mark Rylance (The BFG)
Chris Pine (Star Trek Beyond)
Matthew McConaughey (Gold)
Out of this field, I'm voting for Reynolds.  He deserves it.

Now for "Suicide Squad" and the rest of the superhero movies.
Best Supporting Actress in a Film

Scarlett Johansson (Captain America: Civil War)
Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange)
Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad)
Kate McKinnon (Ghostbusters)
Betty Buckley (Split)
Bryce Dallas Howard (Gold)
As I wrote about Best Actress in a Film, this is an outstanding field.  I'd be happy with just about any one of them, but I'm voting for Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Finally, "Deadpool" was nominated for Best Film Screenplay and "Suicide Squad" for Best Film Make-Up to tie the two movies at three nominations each.  I'm voting for "Arrival" for the first category, but wouldn't be upset if "Deadpool" won and I've decided to change my vote to "Suicide Squad" for the second.

Follow over the jump for the rest of the nominees.

'Hidden Figures' wins two MTV Movie Awards

I promised "I'll have more on the movie winners in a future post" in the first installment of the MTV Movie & TV Awards.  Today is as good a day as any to fulfill that promise.

One of the movies honored last weekend was "Hidden Figures," which won two awards, Best Fight Against the System and Best Hero for Taraji P. Henson.  Watch as Taraji P. Henson Accepts Best Fight Against the System.

Taraji P. Henson of 'Hidden Figures' accepts the award for Best Fight Against The System at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards.
My wife and I just watched "Hidden Figures" on Saturday.  I recommend it without reservation.  In fact, I suggest watching it in a double feature with The Right Stuff.

Speaking of recommendations, "Hidden Figures" is also nominated for the Saturn Awards.  In addition to Taraji P. Henson being up for Best Actress in a Film against Felicity Jones in "Rogue One," Amy Adams in "Arrival," Emily Blunt in "The Girl on the Train," Jennifer Lawrence in "Passengers," Narges Rashidi in "Under the Shadow," and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in "10 Cloverfield Lane," (I'm voting for Adams) the film is nominated for Best Action / Adventure Film Release.  Here is the field.
Allied
Gold
Hacksaw Ridge
Hidden Figures
The Legend of Tarzan
The Magnificent Seven
The Nice Guys
"Hacksaw Ridge" is the sole Academy Award winner here (for editing) and would be the favorite with an electorate of entertainment insiders and professionals, but thankfully (for once!) this isn't that kind of crowd.  Instead, there are a bunch of space enthusiasts voting, including me, so I think it has a better chance with this electorate, which is probably why it was even nominated for this year's Hugo Awards.  Right now, it's my choice for this category.

There were three other speculative fiction winners at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, "Beauty and the Beast," "Get Out," and "Logan," but all of them are this year's movies and will very likely be nominated at next year's Saturn Awards for Best Fantasy Film, Best Horror Film," and Best Comic-to-Motion Picture.  I'll talk about them later -- after I finish posting about the rest of this year's Saturn Awards nominees.

In the meantime,  here's a reminder about voting for the Saturn Awards.
Speaking of "this electorate," my readers and I have a chance to change its composition.  Click here to apply for an affiliate membership.  At $25, one can vote for the best films and television shows.  At $40, one can vote for all categories.  I'm paying $40.  I hope my readers do, too.
I've already paid my $40 and will vote as soon as I post my last entry about the nominees.  Stay tuned.

Baby names from entertainment for Mother's Day 2017

Happy Mother's Day!  To celebrate mothers this Sunday, I'm going to follow up on last year's Baby names inspired by fandom for Mother's Day and 'Star Wars' baby names for Father's Day, beginning with Wochit News asking and answering Kylo Was The Fastest-Rising Boy’s Name in 2016?

In an apparent response to the resurgence in the popularity of Star Wars over the past couple of years, Kylo became the fastest-rising boy’s baby name in the United States in 2016.
Forbes has more on rising baby names from entertainment in Star Wars, Movies & Music Influence Most Popular Baby Names In 2016.
The biggest movers in the top 1000 for 2016 were Kehlani and Kylo. Kehlani rose 2,487 spots on the girls’ side to number 872. The Social Security Administration suggests that the rise could be attributed to Kehlani Parrish, a singer/songwriter who was nominated for a Grammy in 2016. Kehlani recently collaborated with the wildly popular (and my daughter might add "dreamy") Zayn Malik, a former One Direction star and current solo artist (Zayn is also on the fastest rising list for boys' names). The second fastest rising name for girls was Royalty.

Clearly, Star Wars made an impression on the latest generation of parents: Kylo moved an incredible 2,368 spots in 2016 to number 901. Of course, Kylo Ren is the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia and played a prominent role in the blockbuster film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The second fastest rising name for boys also comes from the movies: Creed. In the 2015 movie by the same name, Philly's own Rocky trains and mentors Adonis Johnson Creed, son of Apollo Creed.
Creed was not the only name from the eponymous movie to move up the rankings.  The Social Security Administration's Change in popularity from 2015 to 2016 lists Adonis as the fourth fastest riser, up 307 places from 701 to 394, and Apollo as the fifteenth, up 167 places from 751 to 584.

Other Star Wars names that rose in the rankings included Anakin, which rose 132 places from 910 to 778, Leia, up 100 places from 421 to 321, Rey, increasing 36 places as a boy's name (in the movies, it's a girl's name) from 904 to 868, and Finn, moving 34 from 209 to 175.  On the other hand, Luke lost a place from 28 to 29, and Poe did not end up in the top 1000.  Still, my predictions that Finn, Poe, Rey, and Anakin would increase in popularity over the course of the third trilogy appear to be coming true, as three out of the four are in the top 1000 and becoming more common.

No fandom-related baby names post of mine would be complete without an update on Game of Thrones namesLast year, "the popularity of Khaleesi fell 60 spots from 756th to 816th, which was counterbalanced by Arya rising 15 spots from 216th to 201st.  It was a wash"  This year, both names increased in popularity with Khaleesi moving up 56 places from number 821 to 765 and Arya up 32 places from 201 to 169.  This year was an improvement, not a wash.

Once again, Happy Mother's Day!

Climate change denial bingo card

After sharing Today in climate change on YouTube on the Climate Change Discussion group on Facebook, three denialists jumped all over it.  In response, I posted the following climate change denial bingo card.

Just from those three denialists, I got "climate's changed before," "scientists only want grants," "there is no consensus," and "warming is good," along with three that aren't on this card, "this is a hoax to take away our freedoms," "only dummies believe this," and "fossil fuels are great!"  If those had been on the card in the right places, I'd call "BINGO!"  As for the three denialists, they didn't even realize they were being trolled.

Stay tuned for a Mother's Day post for the Sunday entertainment feature.

Today in climate change on YouTube

Sometimes, it feels like the universe is speaking to me.  Of course, it's just my newsfeed, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't listen.  Today, what it's telling me is that climate change is becoming more of a risk.  Here are the videos about climate change that appeared on my subscription page just today, beginning with WatchMojo's Top 10 Signs Climate Change Is Worse Than Ever.

Climate change is taking a serious toll on the planet earth, and whether is man-made or as a result of natural causes, there's no denying that it's worse then ever. WatchMojo presents the top 10 signs that climate change is worse than ever. Severe wildfires, melting glaciers and extreme weather rank amongst the top of these foreboding signs.

'Stranger Things' and 'The Walking Dead' win at MTV Movie & TV Awards

While I was examining the 2017 Saturn Awards, another awards show took place, the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards.  Two of the shows that I have been blogging about, "Stranger Things" and "The Walking Dead," won awards.

"Stranger Things" was the bigger winner, bringing home two of the golden popcorns, beginning with Millie Bobby Brown Wins Best Actor in a Show | MTV Movie & TV Awards.

I think that was well deserved, at least among the nominated field, which included Emilia Clarke ("Game of Thrones"), Donald Glover ("Atlanta"), Jeffrey Dean Morgan  ("The Walking Dead"), Mandy Moore ("This Is Us"), and Gina Rodriguez ("Jane The Virgin").  Brown is also among the nominees for Best Younger Actor on a Television Series at the Saturn Awards.  She has my vote.  As I wrote, "Her performance wasn't just outstanding, it was compelling."

That's not all.  'Stranger Things' won Show of the Year.

'13 Reasons Why' Cast Presents The Cast Of 'Stranger Things' With Show Of The Year Award.
In addition to Brown being up for a Best Younger Actor on TV and Winona Ryder nominated for Best Actress on a Television Series, "Stranger Things" itself is up for a Saturn Award.
Best New Media Television Series

Bosch
Marvel’s Daredevil
Marvel’s Luke Cage
The Man in the High Castle
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Stranger Things
It has my vote.  I've been saying this could be the year for "Stranger Things" and the Saturn Awards will be my chance to make that happen.

Finally, Jeffrey Dean Morgan won for Best Villain against Wes Bentley ("American Horror Story: Roanoke"), Demogorgon ("Stranger Things"), Jared Leto  ("Suicide Squad"), and Allison Williams ("Get Out").  Negan beat The Joker, and not with a baseball bat!*  Morgan is also up for a Saturn Award for Best Guest Performance on a Television Series and has my vote on a technicality (I don't consider Anthony Hopkins' role in "Westworld" to be a guest performance).

I'll have more on the movie winners in a future post.
Stay tuned.

*That may not be saying much.  As I wrote in 'Suicide Squad' vs. 'Deadpool' at the Razzies and Oscars, "Jared Leto...is probably the worst movie Joker ever, although Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger set very high bars for the role."  Joker should at least be funny when it's called for.  Leto's Joker was just creepy.

Michigan could be as warm as Kentucky by the end of the century

Two months ago, I posted Warmest February on record in seven Michigan cities as well as major cities across U.S..  This is part of a trend, as MLive reported in Michigan's climate will be similar to Kentucky in 100 Years.

MLive's chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa takes a look at the warming trends of Michigan's climate. if the trends continue the climate will be similar to Kentucky in 100 years.
Read How hot will Michigan be in 100 years? Think Kentucky on MLive for the expanded script for this video along with more graphs and other details.

If anyone wonders why I participated in People's Climate March and the March for Science, this video is a good place to start for an answer.

Bill Nye cited the Constitution to justify the March for Science on Colbert's show

I'm not done with the March for Science.  Bill Nye went on Colbert's show last night and, among other things, explained why The March For Science was necessary">
.

'Bill Nye Saves the World' star says current administration isn't upholding the U.S. Constitution's promise to 'promote the progress of science and useful arts.'
That's an angle I hadn't thought of, but Nye was right to use it.  It helps show how abnormal this administration really is.

The U.S. Constitution isn't the only reason Nye has given for the March for Science.  Here's another.

I agree with this explanation, too.  In fact, it's among the reasons I marched on Earth Day, again at the People's Climate March the next Saturday, and why I'll be marching again at the next protest I support.  To a better tomorrow for everyone!

Two songs and a poster for loser Le Pen

While I've been busy with Star Wars Day, Cinco De Mayo, Revenge of the Sixth, and 'The Walking Dead' vs. 'Westworld' at the 2017 Saturn Awards, France was reaching the climax of its presidential campaign.  Yesterday, it held the election and the result was Macron wins French presidential election over LePen by a landslide.  Take it away, ABC News!

Thousands of supporters waved French flags and cheered in front of the Louvre.
Note the Trump support for Le Pen before the election.  Nonnie9999 mocked that in Le Pen and La Pencildick a couple of weeks ago.

"I'm with Stupid" -- where have I seen that before?  Since I'm a good environmentalist, I recycled the idea in a comment.
“I’m with stupid”–I have a song for that. It’s even about the trans-Atlantic relationships between politicians.

“A moron” and “A billion dollar kid.” Perfect!
I surprised Nonnie9999 with the selection.  She loved it, then saw me and raised me.
OMG! I never heard that song before. That was perfect!!!! Here’s another little song for Le Pen and Le Pencildick:

I know that song, having used it in I was in a foul mood until I watched this video after Scott Walker survived his recall.  My opinion of it hasn't changed over the past five years, as I told Nonnie9999 "That’s the perfect song to tell off far-right politicians and media figures."  She agreed.  Now all she and I have to do is get Americans to sing this characteristically British song after every Republican town hall or public appearance.  Wish us luck!

'The Walking Dead' vs. 'Westworld' at the 2017 Saturn Awards

I asked my readers a rhetorical question to conclude A Saturn Awards nomination for 'Star Wars Rebels' plus music from 'Rogue One' for the Revenge of the Sixth.
Stay tuned for the Sunday entertainment feature, which will also be about the Saturn Awards nominees, this time for television.  "The Walking Dead" vs. "Westworld," anyone?
Yes, I'm going to sic two rabid enthusiastic fandoms on each other.  For good measure, I'll add in "Fear the Walking Dead."  I think it will be fun.  But first, watch The 43rd Annual Saturn Award Television Nominations.*

Unlike the video I embedded above the jump in 'Rogue One' at the Saturn Awards for Star Wars Day, this one lists all of the television categories;  all of the television nominations are for shows and actors, none for the technical categories that were left out of the movie nominations video.

With that out of the way, "The Walking Dead" led the television field with seven nominations in six categories, Best Horror Television Series, Andrew Lincoln for Best Actor on a Television Series, Norman Reedus for Best Supporting Actor on a Television Series, both Danai Gurira and Melissa McBride for Best Supporting Actress on a Television Series, Chandler Riggs for Best Younger Actor on a Television Series, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan for Best Guest Performance on a Television Series.  "Westworld" came in second with six nominations in four categories, Best Science Fiction Television Series, both Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright for Best Supporting Actor on a Television Series, both Thandie Newton and Evan Rachel Wood for Best Supporting Actress on a Television Series, and Anthony Hopkins for Best Guest Performance on a Television Series.  The two shows are in direct competition in three categories, Best Supporting Actor on a Television Series, Best Supporting Actress on a Television Series, and Best Guest Performance on a Television Series.  May the better show win.

Follow over the jump for the complete fields in all the categories where at least one of the shows have been nominated, plus Best Actress on a Television Series, where Kim Dickens of "Fear the Walking Dead" earned a nomination, along with my choice to win and my opinion of the rest fo the field.

A Saturn Awards nomination for 'Star Wars Rebels' plus music from 'Rogue One' for the Revenge of the Sixth

Beware the Revenge of the Sixth, the Dark Side of Star Wars  Day!  It turns out that I missed a nomination for the "Star Wars" franchise among those listed in 'Rogue One' at the Saturn Awards for Star Wars Day.  In addition to the eleven nominations for last year's movie, there was also one for "Star Wars: Rebels" as Best Animated Series or Film on Television to bring the total for the franchise to an even dozen.  Here is the field from Slashfilm.
Best Animated Series or Film on Television

Bojack Horseman
Family Guy
The Little Prince
The Simpsons
Star Wars: Rebels
Trollhunters
"Bojack Horseman" may be the Critics' Choice, literally, but there is no guarantee it will win with the Saturn Awards electorate.  I'm going to vote for "Star Wars: Rebels" in hopes it will win.

Speaking of the Saturn Awards nominees, I noted Thursday that Michael Giacchino is nominated for Best Film Music and wrote that I already had a selection from "Rogue One" representing the Dark Side for today.  Here is The Imperial Suite from the movie soundtrack.

Music video by Michael Giacchino performing The Imperial Suite.
To vote for both "Star Wars: Rebels" and "Rogue One," click on the link in the quoted passage.

I've already paid.  Voting is open until May 30th.

Stay tuned for the Sunday entertainment feature, which will also be about the Saturn Awards nominees, this time for television.  "The Walking Dead" vs. "Westworld," anyone?

Tipsy Bartender drinks for Cinco De Mayo 2017

¡Feliz Cinco De Mayo!  As the tradition has become on this blog, I'm celebrating the holiday with drinks from Tipsy Bartender, beginning with the Michelada.

The most delicious Michelada ever...THE BOILING CRAB MICHELADA!
...
1 oz (30ml) Tequila Shot
Coronita Beer
4 oz (120ml) Clamato
1/2 (15ml) Fresh Lime Juice
Worcestershire Sauce
Hot Sauce
Dash of Salt
Rim with Chamoy and Tajin, Shrimp and Cucumbers
Considering that yesterday was Star Wars Day and tomorrow is Revenge of the Sixth, Brittany's Star Wars shirt is a serendipitous bonus.  So was her sticking a lime in Skyy's mouth so she finish the tag line.  I've been waiting for one of the Tipsy Girls to do that to him for years.

Follow over the jump for more recipes.

Marching for the climate worldwide and in Michigan

After taking yesterday off to drink to a late drum corps Earth Day, I'm ready to tackle the People's Climate March.  I'll begin with PBS NewsHour's Climate marchers urge Trump to protect environment.

As President Donald Trump reached the 100th day of his presidency, tens of thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C., for the People’s Climate March, with similar demonstrations around the country. Protesters called for environmental protections even as Trump has proposed cutting funding for science programs and signed an executive order to expand offshore drilling for oil in the Arctic.
PBS mentioned that there were marches in cities across the country.  They were too small in their scope.  There were marches around the world, including in Canada, where CBC's The National included footage from Canadian demonstrations in Climate change protests against Trump's policies.

Marches held in cities around the world Saturday to urge governments to act on climate change.
Welcome to two of the lessons I teach my students, "everything is connected to everything else" and "there is no away."  What the U.S. does affects Canada and vice versa.

Follow over the jump for my story about my joining a sister march in Michigan.

Drink to a late drum corps Earth Day

When I wrote "I doubt I'll have much time for DOOM this week," I didn't realize how little there would be.  I was planning on posting something about the People's Climate March today, but I'm on break this week, so I'm just not feeling it.  Instead, I'm going to give Earth Day the same treatment I've given other holidays, celebrate it with a drink from Tipsy Bartender and music from drum corps.  It's past time I did, especially since Earth Day itself was more than a week ago.  Sometimes inspiration strikes late.

I'll start with the drink, Earth Day Ocean Water.

1 ½ oz. (45ml) Coconut Vodka
¾ oz. (22ml) Blue Curacao
½ oz. (15ml) Lemon Juice
2 oz. (60ml) Lemon Lime Soda
Lime Peel

PREPARATION
1. To an ice filled glass add coconut vodka, blue curacao, lemon juice and lemon lime soda. Stir well to mix. Set aside.
2. Using scissors or a small knife roughly cut the shapes of the continents out of lime peel. Place shapes inside a round glass and pack with crushed ice.
3. Pour mix into glass and serve. Enjoy responsibly!
Now that my readers have a drink, they can sip it while watching two clips of Crossmen's 1992 show, "Songs for the Planet Earth."  First, the official video from Drum Corps International: DVD Spotlight: 1992 Crossmen.

Crossmen's 6th place presentation of "Songs for the Planet Earth" visited our home planet as part one of a three-year song cycle; followed the next two years with "A Celebration of Humanity" and "Suite Children." The show was created with a sense of concern for environmental preservation.
I conclude with the final minute of the show.

I hope my readers found that as inspiring as I did.

I might have something serious tomorrow.  After that, Thursday is Star Wars Day, Friday is Cinco De Mayo, Saturday is Revenge of the Sixth, and Sunday will be an entertainment feature.   As I wrote, there will be very little time for DOOM this week and I'm O.K. with that.

Drum corps fake trees for May Day 2017

A happy drum corps May Day to you!*  Once again, I'm celebrating with a drum corps theme that foreshadowed in the conclusion to last night's post.
Tomorrow is May Day.  I'm planning on another drum corps themed post, this time involving fake trees for the maypoles.**
That goes all the way back to last December's Festivus.
A year ago, I thought I might do something with the aluminum Festivus pole.  That's not happening.
...
I originally put the idea of featuring the aluminum pole in the context of a drum corps Festivus.  It turned out three drum corps, the Santa Clara Vanguard, Mandarins, and Oregon Crusaders, all used fake trees, either aluminum or fiberglass, in their shows this year.  I'll be a good environmentalist and use them for May Day.  I don't just recycle; I conserve my resources and reuse them, too.
The first corps featuring a fake tree in its show was 2016 Santa Clara Vanguard - "Force of Nature".
